Among the discussion's conclusions is that storytelling is important to build empathy and common values in PSC's public campaigns

On December 18-19, SKK Migas Southern Sumatra Representative Office (Sumbagsel) and PetroChina Indonesia held a focus group discussion (FGD) on the latest issues surrounding corporate social responsibility (CSR) and public relations strategy for production sharing contractors (PSCs) in southern Sumatra in 2019-2020.

The event, which was held at Santika Premiere Beach Resort Belitung, was attended by 50 representatives of PSCs in southern Sumatra.

SKK Migas senior institutional relations manager Syafei, SKK Migas secretary specialist Ryan B Wuryantoro, SKK Migas Sumbagsel public relations department head Andi Arie Pangeran and PetroChina senior public relations superintendent Afdal attended the event. Syafei and Ryan served as panelists.

The discussion forum served as a sharing session between southern Sumatra PSCs on the realization of CSR and public relations programs in 2019 and strategic plans for 2020. Obstacles faced by the PSCs in carrying out CSR and public relations programs were also discussed.

In his speech, Andi Arie gave great appreciation for PetroChina and other southern Sumatra PSCs for their involvement in the FGD. He also said that public relations departments in PSCs should stand on the frontline in spreading news of the upstream oil and gas industry’s positive impacts on local communities in southern Sumatra.

“By emphasizing on the benefits of upstream oil and gas activities for local communities, through both CSR and community development programs, we can spread a positive energy to boost public and stakeholders’ support on oil and gas operational activities,” Andi Arie said. He continued that PSCs in southern Sumatra should also improve their media engagement in reporting various public outreach activities and operational achievements in 2020.

During the event, representatives from four of the largest PSCs in southern Sumatra presented their respective company’s CSR and public relations program realization and plan. The representatives were Afdal from PetroChina, Sutijak from Pertamina EP Asset 1, Imam Maulana from Pertamina EP Asset 2 and Deddy Afrianto and Novita Ambarsari from Medco EP Indonesia.

In the panel discussion, Syafei said that PSCs must synergize with the government in planning and carrying out CSR and public relations programs to increase their effectiveness and efficiency.

Meanwhile, Ryan said that storytelling should be key in PSCs’s public campaigns of CSR and community development programs. He said that oil and gas companies should focus on strategic problem-solving and collaboration in establishing and maintaining communication with stakeholders, as these would boost public awareness on the company’s programs. He concluded that the ability to empathize with your audience and build common values were the essence of effective communication.

The FGD was conducted as part of collective CSR and public relations strategy among PSCs to support the fulfillment of the national oil and gas production target of one million BOEPD in 2030.
